Green City Force

Green City Force’s Clean Energy Corps, an AmeriCorps program based in New York City, combines national service and workforce development to reduce carbon emissions while providing urban young adults with training and leadership opportunities related to greening the economy.

GCF’s core programmatic elements are:

Service. Four days per week, AmeriCorps Members are out in the field performing service projects in teams under the supervision of a Team Leader to improve community environmental health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Past projects have included: outreach and education on free energy efficiency programs to low-income communities, performing energy audits in low-income homes, engaging in urban agriculture and horticulture, building and maintaining farms at NYCHA, and recycling education.

Training. Approximately one day per week, Corps Members participate in Green City Academy, a rigorous academic and technical training program that prepares Corps Members for entry-level work in energy efficiency and urban agriculture. GCF’s training model is employer-driven, designed to expand knowledge in fields related to clean energy and sustainability, with an emphasis on transferable skills and career pathways.

Support. Corps Members receive a monthly stipend, transportation, support services, job placement assistance, and alumni follow-up services.

The Clean Energy Corps is a 6- or 10-month full-time program.

  • Six Month Model → GCF’s Love Where You Live Corps is focused on outreach efforts throughout NYCHA to promote energy efficiency, recycling, and other sustainability initiatives.

  • Ten Month Model → GCF’s Urban Farm Corps is focused on building and maintaining farm sites in various NYCHA developments. These Farms expand healthy food access, while promoting sustainable and connected public housing communities.

GCF 2.0 will further develop and formalize employer partner involvement in career track training and job placement. In scaling sector-focused skills development, GCF will create a platform to better equip and support graduates to be competitive for increased employment retention and advancement opportunities in family supporting careers.
